1.) Why did you create NoFace for Film?
I created this blog because I wanted a movie review blog. I love watching movies and talking about movies. Simple as that! This actually isn’t my first attempt at a movie reviews site. I had one several years ago, but it was really hard work since I was using Front Page to create the site. It sucked. The thing was that I created that movie review site so I could advertise the Amazon-like online store I was running. I tell ya, it was a disaster.
My next movie review blog was called Reel Reviews, and it was from a Wordpress.com blog. As easy as it was to use it, Wordpress.com blogs have a lot of restrictions on them, and I felt that I needed my own host and domain name to really grow. All of the early posts came straight from my Reel Reviews blog.
2.) What does “NoFace for Film” mean?
As much as I liked the name Reel Reviews, I was too hasty in using it for my title and subdomain name. I found out that about 6 other blogs already have that name or at least a variation of it.
When I decided to get my own domain name, I didn’t want to be too hasty and make the same mistake as I did with Reel Reviews. I thought about it for a week, trying out different domain names to see if they’ve been taken or if they sounded good. I started thinking about referring to my personal blog, Kaonashi Ga Suki. At the same time I didn’t want to use a Japanese word in the name since I wanted people to have an easier time in finding in various directories. I wanted to incorporate the word No Face (”Kaonashi” in English) in the title. My boyfriend finally suggested NoFace for Film, adding that it has a double meaning. For example, “He has no voice for radio; she has no face for film”. Lo and behold, a new movie review blog/site was born.
3.) What kinds of movies will you be reviewing?
All kinds. Whatever I happen to watch, or whatever I feel like reviewing. You won’t see many gory horror slash film reviews though, nor of movies involving hostage situations. Nor of movies that involve lots of kids. Of course, there are a few notable exceptions in these three fields.
I invite people to be contributors on movies in fields that I don’t cover, and any other type of movies they want to review. But please, no spoilers. Just let me know if you’d like to participate and I can set you up with a contributor account.
4.) Hey! A lot of these movies you’re reviewing are pretty old!
Yep, most of the reviews will be on older movies. Why? Because not everyone has seen certain movies, and they need some advice on deciding what DVDs to rent or buy. Besides, I can’t possibly watch new movies 3 times a week. It’s too expensive! I don’t get paid for this, ya know
5.) On what elements are your reviews based?
Since I’m not an actual critic and never went to film school (I did take a film history class once. That was awesome!), I can’t talk too much about technical attributes such as lighting and shadow, etc. However, as someone who just likes a good story, I try to look at elements like character and plot development, whether or not certain scenes dragged out or were even necessary, etc.
But most of all, I think about whether the movie is engaging enough that I would like to watch it again and again. A movie can be artistically filmed, have an A-list cast, and have a genius director, but if I’m bored by it, I won’t give it a very high rating. On the other hand, a movie can be really silly with an unknown cast, but if I feel that I can watch it over and over, then it gets a higher rating.
6.) How often will you do the reviews?
I try to review when I can, usually around 2-3 times a week. Hence my request for contributors to help fill in for me when this happens. Sometimes I throw in articles related to film.
7.) I’ve made a movie. Will you review it?
Sure! I would love to review your movie. Just fill out the “Contact” form and I’ll get back to you. I prefer DVD format though, as I don’t have a VCR -but who does these days?
8.) Anything else you’d like to add?
Nah, not really. I welcome questions and discussions about the movies that I review as long as commenters are respectful of me and of other commenters.
I suppose it would be inevitable that spoilers would arise from such discussions, so all I ask is to at least warn people that there’s a spoiler ahead. Eventually I’ll add a spoiler plugin for people to use if they wish.
Thanks for stopping by! Please come again!
