Ghost Rider to Avoid Critics? at NoFace for Film

Ghost Rider to Avoid Critics?

UPDATE: Cinematical reports that the original New York Post article is no longer correct. Ghost Rider is screening for critics tonight in Los Angeles, and will continue screening until its release date.

Hmmmm, I don’t like the sound of this. The New York Post reports that Ghost Rider will be opening a week from Friday with nary a mention from the critics. More specifically, Sony is inviting critics to watch the movie the night before the opening, as well as a “courtesy” screening on Friday. This means that any reviews will appear in the Saturday papers, which is too late to inform the public on whether or not to see Ghost Rider during its opening weekend.

The Post further adds that as of recently Sony has been at the forefront at “opening cold”, this practice of disallowing early screenings of their films, especially low-budget ones. Coincidentally (or not?), this has led to a number of Sony films opening at No. 1 last year. As an example, just this weekend The Messengers, which had opened cold, debuted to No. 1 at the box office. Only after the movie premiered are we now getting reviews of how bad it truly is.

That being said, I’ve got a bad, bad feeling about Ghost Rider. It’s bad enough that it’s opening in February, a month usually considered as a dumping ground of shit movies, but for Sony not to have enough faith in it to warrant early reviews is just ominous. Dammit. I was so looking forward to this. Maybe I should just stick to my Marvel Ultimate Alliance game if I want to see Ghost Rider.

I’ve been wanting to see that one myself. But, I usually don’t worry about what critics say. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what they like or dislike, might not be the same for me.

Thanks for the info though. Nicholas Cage’s films are usually good (just ’cause he’s in ‘em), so I still plan on going to see it.

I’m a little worried about this too. I want it to be good, but have a sinking feeling about it. But I’ve never listened to critics much anyway. I mean Hannibal Rising is getting horrible reviews but I’m still going to see it tonight.

Dana and Drew- I can understand what you guys mean by not listening to critics. You want to make up your own mind. And yes, of course we all have differing opinions about what kinds of movies we like. At the same time however, critics are there to help the public decide whether or not to spend your hard earned money and spare time on a movie, or if you’re better off doing something else.

As for me, I don’t pay much attention if just a couple of people say that a certain movie is good or bad. In fact, some are a no-brainer. The trailer for Norbit immediately told me that it sucked and I should stay far, far away. Often times though, if I need a little more guidance, I go to a website like Rotten Tomatoes and look at the combined average of critics’ reviews. If say, 85% out of 200 critics are giving a film a positive rating, you can bet that I’ll be intrigued to watch it.
