The Departed Trilogy?
Published by Kaonashi January 20th, 2007 in News.
As many people know, Martin Scorsese’s brilliant film The Departed is based on the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. Now, while Infernal Affairs was actually a trilogy, with the story taking place over the course of several years, The Departed condensed the stories from the original films into one film. However, it now seems that Scorsese’s work may be expanded as well.
Ace Showbiz reports talks on expanding The Departed into its own trilogy. These talks are supported by Mark Wahlberg, who played the cranky and foul-mouthed Sargeant Dingam.
So we may do a sequel with a new cast, and a prequel and bring back the rest of the guys.
Wahlberg also name drops Robert DeNiro as one of the people who was approached to discuss these potential films.
To be honest, I don’t know what to make of this news. I suppose technically, a prequel would work out fine. I figure it would focus on the early years of Jack Nicholson’s mobster boss character, Frank Costello. Because of this, I figure that they would go with a much younger actor to play Costello. However, I’m not quite sure how they would do a sequel, on account of the ending of The Departed being what it is. Overall though, I hope that Scorsese says no to it. You can’t improve on perfection. But even if he refuses, I have a sinking feeling that if they really want to, the studio would go ahead and make the two other films anyway, using some hack director with shitty actors. Greedy asses.
